Add up the implied chances of both sides of a market and you get more than 100%. The extra is the cut, also called the vig, the juice or the hold. On a balanced book it is what the house keeps no matter which side wins.
A standard -110 against -110 market holds about 4.5%, or roughly 4.5 cents per dollar. The bigger the hold, the worse every price in that market is before any question of skill. Markets with more legs, like player props and parlays, usually hold much more.
You cannot avoid the cut on a single book, but you can shrink it. The same bet is priced differently in different places, and taking the best available price is the cheapest edge in betting.
The hold is the cost of the price before you are right or wrong. Smaller is better, and the best price you can find is the one to measure against.
