How we know

How we know

Why trust our numbers?

BetChecker puts your tout's claim next to the market's price. Here's why the market is the right referee, and how we tested it before we built anything.
1. The math
It's the standard math. Nothing secret.
Break-even, taking out the sportsbook's cut, and the skill-or-luck test are textbook formulas. We checked our skill-or-luck code against a separate calculation written from scratch, and the two agree.
2. The referee
Why Pinnacle's price counts as reality
Pinnacle (pinnacle.com) is a sportsbook that says it welcomes winners. It takes big bets from sharp bettors and moves its price when they win, so in our tests its price ended up about as close to the truth as we could find.
We checked that ourselves. We matched 121,000 real trades on Kalshi, a betting exchange (kalshi.com), against Pinnacle's prices for the same bets.
67%
of the money traded within 2 cents of Pinnacle's fair price
92%
traded within 4 cents
That covered 17.3 million contracts across 1,217 games, the part of the six weeks we could match to Pinnacle's price. Over those games, Pinnacle's prices matched what actually happened, within normal statistical noise.
3. Our own test
We tried to beat the market. We couldn't.
Before building BetChecker, we went looking for an easy edge with six weeks of real trading data: 54 million player-prop contracts and 218 million game-line contracts.
We tried posting our own prices, betting only when Pinnacle said the price was good, and checking whether long shots were mispriced. Every version came out at about zero or worse.
The money bettors lost went to the exchange's fees, not to smart bettors.
$48M+
paid in fees by bettors on Kalshi in six weeks (Aug 22 to Oct 3, 2026)
$2.8M
of that on player props alone
How we got the fee number: Kalshi charges 7% × price × (1 − price) per contract. For player props we used the real price of every trade. For game lines, where we have volume but not trade prices, we assumed the cheapest realistic fee. So $48 million is a floor; the true total is likely higher, up to about $130 million.
Why the numbers differ: each one is a different slice of the same six weeks. 17.3 million contracts could be matched to Pinnacle's price; 272 million (54 million player props and 218 million game lines) were in the settled markets we tested for an edge; the fee estimate covers all sports trading on Kalshi in that window.

4. What it means for you
Your tout should have to prove it
If a careful search through millions of real trades finds no easy edge, a tout selling picks should have to show real proof of theirs. A hot streak isn't proof. Beating the market's price, again and again, is.
That's why BetChecker checks the price, not the promises.
5. Limits
What our test can't tell you
• It covered one stretch of one season, August to October 2026. It rules out edges of a few cents, not every edge that could exist.
• Our Pinnacle snapshots were up to 2 hours apart, so very fast betting wasn't tested.
• We tested markets, not any particular tout.
• We found no edge. That's not the same as proving none exists.
